The land of wonky toys
Looby Journal #23 - Including stitching creatures, walking mountains, forest bathing, Harrison Ford, wooden trolls & Boots Riley.
Hello Wednesday readers,
What will you do with your one precious life? I don’t know about mine, I can never decide… but I seem to know what I will do with my one precious day. Whenever I have free time, I drift back to my fabric pile, with all its textures and patterns, and start sewing little characters. I love making things without a pattern or a guide. Experimenting with proportion and expression of form is a creative joy.
Usually, I am attempting to make the cutest, most appealing creature that will tug at my heartstrings, and frequently it doesn’t quite make it. This means my cupboard is full of strange half-baked animals and dolls, which will likely never see the light of day. Pixar should make a movie about that. This kind of stitching seems to connect to something very deep for me. It’s an act of soothing comfort and a giving out to the world. I understand Geppetto’s impulse. Maybe Jung had it right when he said that dolls are “archetypes that connects the living to the past by a bridge of emotions, innate mental tendencies, to explain the inner and outer self.”
Soon I will have a small collection available for sale, which will be available to Wednesday subscribers first before I put them out for public sale through my Instagram. There will be a handful of my “classic” marshmallow bunnies and a smattering of new cat dolls.
